5. Hitopadesh - The Jackal And The Arrows

Once upon a time, a hunter lived happily with his family in a village.

One morning, the hunter set out for hunting a deer in the nearby forest. After entering the forest, he soon saw a deer and hunted it down. He hung the deer carcass over his shoulder and began walking back for home.

While he had come a short distance he saw a wild boar. The hunter amazed at his luck, dropped the deer carcass and shot the boar with an arrow. The wounded boar was still powerful. It pulled the hunter and killed him, before he himself died.

After sometime a jackal passed through the same place. He saw the dead hunter and boar lying near each other and the carcass of dear at some distance.

The jackal was hungry and overjoyed to find so much food without any efforts.”

The jackal thought, “I am very lucky to have so much food. But I will eat only some part of it so that the food may last longer”.

The greedy jackal decided to first gather and eat the fresh around arrow. But the arrow badly pricked his jaws and went through his head. The greedy jackal died hungry.

Moral: Greed is not good. It never pays.
