4.9 Panchtantra - The Famished Dog

Once there lived a dog in a village. Its name was Chitranga.

One year the crop perished and the village was plagued by famine. People and animals starved. Animals which were fed by people were famished and some died.

Chitranga had been hungry for days together. He could found no food and therefore decided to leave the village in search of food.

After traveling for hours, he reached a town. There he saw a house whose door was open. Chitranga quietly went inside and found a lot of food. He ate well and then quietly left the house.
When Chitranga came out he saw dogs of other community were ready to attack him. He tried to escape, but could not ran fast due to over eating. He was mercilessly bitten and wounded by the dogs.

Chitranga struggled hard and escaped. He thought, 'It is better to be in one's own country be it famine or flood. Alien land can be merciless'.

Chitranga decided to leave the town and return home.

Chitranga was injured badly. He struggled and somehow reached home. Seeing him his friends and relatives gathered to ask him about the foreign town.

Chitranga replied, 'The town was prosperous and there was ample food. People there are careless and leave doors of the house open. You can steal or receive food to eat. But there are no friends and no community.  The other dogs feel you are taking away their share. They will collectively torment you. It is wise to be to be in one's own country'.

Moral: You lapses may be tolerated by ousiders, but your kith and kin won't tolerate them.
