102. Aesop's Fables - The Bee and the Jupiter

Once there lived a beautiful honey bee on the Mount of Hymettus. She was the queen of the hive.

One day the queen collected some fresh honey made from new season flowers and went to Olympus to present it to Jupiter.

The Jupiter was elated with the offering and said, 'O delightful creature! I am pleased with your offering. Ask a boon and I shall grant it'.

The queen was happy to hear Jupiter. She smiled and bowed before him, saying 'O mighty Jupiter! It your grace and blessing upon us that we can make such sweet honey. But humans are harsh towards us. They steal our honey and often kill us. I pray thee, to grant us a sting which serves as a weapon for our defence. If any mortal approaches me for harm, I can kill him by my sting'.

Lord Jupiter was unhappy to hear the queen. He loved humans and did not wanted to grant such a boon. But he had to keep his word, and said 'I will grant you the boon, but it will come to you as a scourge in disguise. If you sting any human, the sting will remain in the wound and you will die after you lose it'.

The queen was pleased with boon and returned to the Earth. One day, a mortal came to collect the honey from hive. The angry bee flew and sting him. The human cried in pain and the queen flew. But her sting remain in the wound and she soon died.

Moral: Evil wishes, like chickens, come home to roost.
