One day all Gods gathered in the heaven. Lord Indra, the ruler of heaven was seated on his thrown with his favourite parrot besides him.
When the God of Death, Yama (Yamraj) arrived, he saw the parrot and smiled. The parrot was sacred to see Yama smile at him. When the other Gods in the assembly saw Yama smiling at the parrot, they requested Yama to spare his life.
Yama said, "Death is a matter of destiny. You all should request the destiny in this matter."
The Gods requested the destiny to spare the parrot's life but she said, "I cannot take the decision to take life of this parrot. The final decision lies in the hands of Death".
The Gods went to Death. When death saw the parrot, it just died.
The Gods were helpless and sad over the death of parrot. Seeing this, the God of Death said, "Death is a universal truth. No one can escape it - richest or poorest. It is destined to come to everyone."
Moral: One who takes birth has to die one day
