139. Aesop's Fables - The Lion's Bad Breadth

Once there lived a lion with his family in a forest.

One morning, after the lion woke up, his wife told him  that his breath was unpleasant and bad. The lion was embarrassed to hear this and became angry. He decided to call his counsellors and confirm if it was true.

The counselor came one by one. A meek sheep came first. The lion asked her if his breadth was awful. The sheep was innocent and gave honest reply. She said, "Majesty, your mouth smells very bad."

The lion was offended by the sheep's reply because she was honest. He was angry and killed her.

After the sheep, a wolf came to lion. The lion asked the wolf, if his breadth was fowl. The wolf knew how the sheep who gave honest reply to the lion was killed. So the wolf was cautious and said, "Your Majesty, your breadth is not bad at all. It is as pleasing as the smell of fresh roses."

The lion was enraged to hear the wolf's reply and killed him saying, "Ugly flatterer! Think I don't understand."
After the wolf it was turn of fox, who was lion's third counsellor. The lion asked the fox the same question.

The fox was aware how the lion cruelly killed the earlier two counsellors. He said, "Your Majesty, I have not been keeping well for past few days. I have been suffering from very bad cold and cannot smell anything due to nose".
The lion let the fox go.

Moral : It is important that we understand the when to speak.
