The Story of Moon Waxing

Once there lived a king named Daksha. King Daksha had twenty seven daughters. The king married all of them to Lord Moon on condition that he would treat all of them equally.
However, Lord Moon admired and loved only Rohini, the most beautiful and graceful of all sisters. He shone the brightest on the nights when he visited Rohini.
Other sisters of Rohini were sad. They went to their father - King Daksha and complained about the moon's attitude towards them. The king became very angry with Moon God as he failed to keep his promise. He cursed the moon that it would lose its radiance, as they betrayed his wives other than Rohini.
Seeing the vailing Moon, the Sun God came to his help. He gave the holy nectar (aamrit) to him, to help him regain his vigour. The moon God gain some strength and went to Lord Brahmvartta for his advice.
Hearing the plight of Moon God, Lord Brahma asked him to seek blessings from Lord Shiva, the saviour of the world by meditating on his name. The moon God did the penance, which pleased Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva set the moon God partially free from the curse and enable him to shine in phase. Thus, the moon grows in brightness during the ascendant phase, while it loses its sheen in the waxing phase of moon.
