16. Aesop's Fables - The Horse and the Ass

One day a horse and his friend an ass set in a journey together.

The horse kept prancing all along the way. But the ass carried heavy weight in its panniers and walked with much effort. The ass sighed and said, 'Friend, I wish I was born as a horse. You have great hoofs, your are fed well and taken care of. People harness you well and take pride riding on you'.

The horse nodded in pride.

While they were passing through the forest, they came across a regiment of soldiers. The soldiers tamed both horse and the ass. The horse was fed well and trained for battle field. The ass carried the loads for the regiment.

Soon there was a battle.

The horse went to the battlefield, were it was severely wounded. It was brought back to the camp, where it died a painful death. When the ass came in the evening, and saw the corpse of his friend, he cried. He said, 'I was wrong. My friend was fed and taken to the battlefield where he died'.

The ass understood that it is better to be contended and happy with what you are.

Moral: Better humble security than gilded danger.
