26. Aesop's Fables - The Frogs Who Desired a King

Once there lived a population of frogs in a swampy base of a river. There was abundant food and the weather remained fine all throughout the year. The frogs lived happily there. They crocked throughout the day, went around splashing and jumping merrily as there were restrictions or restrains. The frogs enjoyed their freedom.

However, certain frogs in the population thought it was incorrect to have such liberties. They expressed the need to have a constitution and an appropriate ruler. So one day they gathered and took their petition to Zeus.

The frogs cried, 'O mighty Zeus! We frogs have come to request you to send a ruler who could guide us, rule us and keep order in our territory'.

Zeus was surprised to hear the frogs. He laughed out loudly. He dropped a wooden log into the marshy area where thr frogs dwelled.

The log was their new king. But the frogs did not realise it at first. They were frightened to see the sudden falling log and thought it was something that would harm them. So they ran heither and theither to defend themselves. After sometime, the frogs realised that log did not move. So few of the bold frogs got together and approached it. One of them, jumped on the log and started dancing on it. The frogs who had taken their petition to Zeus realized that the log was Zeus send. They called it King Log.

The frogs rejoiced over the coming of new king. They danced and talked highly about the him. The King Log sat admits the frogs while they organized the coronation ceremony for him.

Days passed by and soon the frogs realized that the king was not in command. He was not  ruling the subjects and simply remained in the place it come down to. The frogs were worries and decided to send another petition to Zeus.

The frog in their petition to Zeus said, 'O mighty Zeus, we plead to send us a real king who can rule and protect our people'.

But Zeus was angry to hear the petition. He send a large stork in the marsh dwelled by the frogs. The stock gobbled the frogs one by one. The kingless kingdom of frogs was devasted. The frigs repented but it too late.

Moral: Better no rule than cruel rule.
