Once there lived a great Zen teacher. His name was Benzei (Benzai is a Japanese word meaning 'Long live the King'.
Benzei was a popular master and had many pupils.
One day one of the pupils of the monastery was caught stealing some food. The students went complained about him to Benzei. However, Benzei took no action against the boy.
Days passed by. One night the boy against stole a fellow's blanket. The students approached Benzei again. When Benzei did nothing, the students were enraged. They threatened to part from Benzei's monastary.
When Benzei came to know about the student's enrage, he summoned all his students. He asked the boy who stole to sit besides him and addressed the others, 'You all are wise. You understand what is right and what is wrong. If you all leave my school, you will have no problem in getting admission to other school. But think of your fellow who does not understands the difference between night and wrong. If I ask him to go, who will accept him and teach him? I cannot ask this innocent soul to leave even if it means loosing all'.
The students admired the master's comitment towards his pupils - especially the ignorant ones. They accepted the boy who stole things as a part of their group. On the other hand, the boy who had engaged in stealing, was filled with shame and remorse. He stood up and asked forgiveness from the teacher and all students. He promised never to enage in unethical acts such as steaking. Later in life, he became renowned for his integrity.
