37. The Blind Saint

Once there lived a blind saint during reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The saint was known far and wide for foreseeing future correctly.

One day a man and his wife came to sage with their niece. The girl's patents were murdered in front of her eyes due which she was gripped in fear and behaved irrationally. When the girl saw the sage, she began screaming that the sage was her parent's murderer.

The sage was enraged to hear the girl. He asked the man and his wife to leave his hermitage immediately.

The man and his wife returned home with their niece. But the girl cried pitifully. She pleaded her uncle and aunt to trust her. The man and his wife looked helplessly at the girl. They decided to approach Birbal for help.

Birbal heard the entire story from man. His wife and niece stood by his side while he talked to  Birbal. The girl kept crying. Birbal consoled all of them. He asked them to wait in the court. He send his men to bring the sage to court amicably and respectfully.

The blind sage came to court and settled in the front seat. Just then Birbal came running with a sword towards the sage and attempted to kill him. The blind saint threw himself back in bewilderment. He pulled a sword from person standing next to him and stood to fight in defense.

Birbal immediately stepped behind and dropped his sword. He raised his voice in the court and said, 'How can a blind man defend himself so accurately?'

The sage suddenly realized how wrong he was to react impulsively. He threw away the sword and attempted to flee, but was caught by the king's men. Birbal narrated the entire story to Akbar. Akbar was very angry with the sage indecent and indiscriminate attitude. He ordered his men to put him behind the bar and hang him to death for breaching people's faith in name of God and killing girl's parents. He consoled the girl and appreciated her bravery in the court. The girl was adequately rewarded by the king and returned home with her uncle aunt.
