One day emperor Akbar saw Birbal to the royal palace to attend the court on his foot. Since Akbar was very find of Birbal and took special care of him, he promised to give him a horse.
Akbar asked his horseman to give a horse to Birbal.
The horseman was shrewd. One of the horses in the stable was old, weak and sick. It required more care, therefore the horseman send the old sick horse to Birbal's place as a gift from the emperor.
But the horse was miserably weak. It could hardly eat or drink what Birbal and his wife gave it.
During the silent hours if the night the horse died.
Next day Akbar saw Birbal coming on foot again. He asked him, 'Birbal, a horse was send to your home. Why have you come on foot again?'
Birbal replied musingly, 'My Majesty, it was a great horse. It had a fleet of feet and crossed the Earth to reach Heaven in one night'.
Akbar understood what Birbal meant. He scolded the horse keeper and asked him to arrange a very good horse for Birbal.
