42. Hot Iron Test

Once there lived a man named Hasan in the city of Agra. Agra was then under the rule of Mughul Emperor Akbar.

One day a man brought a case against Hasan before the local chief. He was accused of stealing the man’s necklace. The chief knew Hasan well. He knew hasan was a honest and innocent, and the charges against were baseless.

The chief asked the man, ‘How do you know that Hasan stole your necklace?’

The man contended, ‘I saw him stealing the necklace with my own eyes’.

But Hasan defended, ‘Chief, I didn’t steal his neckpiece.  As a matter of fact, I do not know anything about his necklace’.

The man was shrewd. He said, ‘Hasan, you are a God’s man. If you are innocent, prove it. I will fetch a hot iron rod. Hold the rod with your bare hands. If you are innocent, God will protect you and I will agree that you are innocent’.

Hasan gazed in horror and surprise. He asked the chief to grant him one day to find the necklace. The chief agreed and then they all left.

Hasan was very worried. He decided to approach Birbal who was his friend and neighbor. When Birbal was back from the court, Hasan narrated the entire incidence to him and asked for his advice. Birbal though critically and then suggested a way out to Hasan.

Next day Hasan assembled with the man and others before the chief. He said, ‘O chief, I am ready to take the hot iron rod in my hand to verdict my innocence. But the same trial should apply for him. If it is true that he saw me stealing the necklace, God will protect against the wrath of the iron rod. I shall take turn after he holds the hot iron rod’.

The man gasped in surprise and fear. He knew he was on the wrong side. He asked the judge to dismiss the matter, contending that the necklace may be misplaced in his house.

Hasan was happy and thanked Birbal for his advise.
