One fine day Akbar went on a hunting expedition with his courtiers. While they searched for preying upon birds, Akbar heard the fierce sound of two quarreling owls.
Akbar was perplexed. He thought it was a bad omen and asked Birbal, 'Why are these owls hooting so loudly? Why are they quarreling?'
Birbal said, 'My Majesty, they are fighting to settle the dowry amount. The elder looking owl is groom’s father and he is asking for forty jungles in the dowry with no animals. The other owl who looks somewhat timid is bride’s father. He is contending that he can arrange for only twenty jungles'.
Just then the younger owl hooted loudly. Hearing this, Akbar asked Birbal, 'How what is the bride's father saying?'
Birbal replied, 'The bride's father is asking the other owl to wait for another six months, as then he would be able to give him all forty jungles he is asking for without any animals'.
Akbar understood Birbal's message. He decided and gave up hunting altogether.
