46. Akbar's Ring

One day Akbar went on a hunting expedition. It was a very hot day. He roamed the forest with his courtiers, felling birds here and there. After hours of traversing, they felt thirsty. So they moved ahead in search of water.

As they came forward, Akbar saw a well. He headed further and peeped into the well to see if there was water, when his ring fell in the dry well. The courtiers stood thinking how to take the ring out. They had no means to go down the well to get the ring.

Jus then Birbal said, ‘My majesty, give me some time. I shall bring back your ring from this well’. Akbar was tired and thirsty, he didn’t want to wait. But he had no choice and agreed to wait.

Birbal went around the place and brought some fresh cow dung. He threw the dung on the ring. Then he tied a stone on one end of a string and strike it hard on the dung. The stone got stuck the ring.

They waited while the cow dung dried. After this Birbal pulled the string, fetching the stone stuck in the ring. Akbar was happy with the Birbal’s presence of mind.
