69. Birbal Identifies The Real Shah (King)

Birbal Birbal was known and acclaimed far and wide for his wisdom and wittiness.
The Shah of Persia who was a distant cousin to Emperor Akbar had often heard about Birbal. He often came to know how Birbal solved the problems with his wisdom and wit. Day after day, the Shah became curious about Birbal. He expressed his desire to meet Birbal and send a formal invite for him. When Akbar came to know about the invite he felt proud and happy to have Birbal in his court. He asked Birbal to accept the invitation and go to Persia. The emperor sends several valuable gifts for the Shah of Persia and his family.
After days of journey, Birbal arrived at the Capital of Persia. He was warmly welcomed and honored. The Shah’s men led Birbal into the grand chamber where the king was seated. However, Birbal saw that the throne was not occupied by the Shah. There were seven men dressed in royal clothes who were seated on seven thrones in a row. Birbal understood that the Shah wanted to test his intelligence.
Birbal observed the men seated on the thrones for a while and then went to the man who was seated third from the right. He humbly bowed before him and touched his head with his right palm as a customary greeting, saying ‘O Great Emperor of Persia, I come to greet you from the far country of India. The great emperor of our country send for you great warmth, regards and compliments. Kindly accept them as a token of love and remembrance for us’.
People in the court, including the Shah gave a jaw dropping reaction. The Shah applauded Birbal for his ready wit and asked him, ‘Birbal, tell us how you came to know about the real Shah?’
Birbal explained, ‘O Great Shah! You are honored and looked upon. While the men around you had a bending disposition and looked at you, you sat in upright authority. You glanced only at me, while others looked towards you. It was an easy pointer towards you, the Shah!’
The Shah was impressed by Birbal’s expression of unsaid wisdom and wit. Birbal was highly honored by the Shah and enjoyed his company for several weeks.
