8. The Dismissal

One morning Akbar was discussing stately affairs with his courtiers when the queen's messenger rushed into the court and informed him, "My Majesty, the queen is troubled by a terrible headache. She desires to see you'.

Akbar immediately got on his toes. He stood up to leave, when he saw Birbal smiling. Akbar became very angry. He shouted at Birbal, 'Birbal, the queen is troubled and you are smiling hearing this news? This is an act of insolence and disrespect. I must ask if have forgotten the code of conduct set to be followed in court?'
Akbar was furious. He fired Birbal -'Leave this court immediately. Do not step on soil of this country. Never show me your face!'

Birbal attempted to interrupt Akbar and explain the reason for his smile, but Akbar was too angry to listen. He didn't even gave a chance to Akbar for apologizing. So, Birbal calmly saluted the king and left the court. He left the city and went somewhere without telling anyone.

The courtiers who were envied Birbal, enjoyed the scene. They all were very happy to see Birbal leaving Akbar's court.

Days passed by. Akbar was upset with what happened in the court. In fact he regretted his reaction towards Birbal. One evening when Akbar stood near his window to watch the sunset, and beautiful greenlands, he saw a charioteer circling in the same area over and again. Akbar wondered who it cod be. He observed closely and saw that it was Birbal who had been circling in the chariot aimlessly.

Akbar went to Birbal. He angrily asked, 'Birbal how you dare violate my orders? I asked you leave the soils of this country, didn't I ?'

Birbal gave an innocent smile and said, 'My Majesty, I am following your orders. You asked me not to step on the soils of this country. Indeed, since last five days, I  have been living on this chariot'.

Akbar just laughed out. He embraced Birbal and rode back to the place on the same chariot laughing and talking a the way to the palace.
