The Dove and the Owls

Once there lived a beautiful dove named Anuradha with his wife Heti on the banks of the Goutami Ganga. Anuhrada was grandson of Yama, the God of death.

On a nearby tree there lived an owl named Uluka, with his wife Uluki. They were descends of Agni, the God of fire.

The doves and the owls were bitter enemies and often fought amongst themselves. The dove used the weapons they had received from Agni and the owls used the weapons bestowed by Yams. There was continual  bloodshed and lose of life. Seeing this, both Yama and Agni were upset. So they decided intervene before weapons of Agni could be wrongly used to ashen everything.

The Gods approached their descendants and counselled them. They persuaded the community of owls and the doves to forgo their enmity and live together. The birds were told how their generation was threatened due to perennial wars.

The birds agreed and decided to forgo their past for better future. Legends state that the place where the birds lived came to be known as tirtha (meaning place of divine occurance). The Yamyatirtha was the abode of owls and Agnitirtha was the abode of doves.
