8. Hitopadesh : The Foolish Barber

Long time ago there lived a man named Dirha. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Dirha did penance for several years to get boon from Lord Shiva.

One day the God appeared before him and told him to ask for a boon. He asked the God to him a wealthy and influential person.

Hearing this, Lord Shiva said “In the morning shave your head and hide behind a bush. A beggar will come. You must jump on the beggar with a stick and he will turn into a pot of gold”.

Dirha called the barber and got his head shaved. He hid behind the bush. The barber saw this and became curious.

A beggar came and Dhira hit him with stick. It turned into a pot of gold which Dhira took and went inside happily.

The barber was amazed. He thought he could make wealth the same way. So returned home and shaved his head. He hid behind the bush and when a poor man passed he hit him with a stick so badly that the beggar died. Seeing this people gathered around.

Soon the king's soldiers arrived and arrested the barber. He punished and hanged to death.

Moral: Never act foolishly and greedily."
