4. The Rumor

One day Birbal was on his way back to his home. On the way, a man came following him. The man greeted Birbal and began a conversation out of nowhere. He was glib and began talking about his woes to Birbal.

The man said persuasively, ‘Birbal, I have heard great things about you. People say that you are one of the most liked and rewarded courtiers in the court of Akbar. They believe you are indeed generous and humble both by your descend and present standing. You are believed to be engaging in secret charity. I have came miles walking to see you. I except some help from you’.

Birbal understood what the man implied. He knew the man was asking him for money.

Birbal paused and sternly replied, ‘Friend, sadly you have to again go back all those miles. Am I right?’

The man replied, ‘Yes, I have to go walk all those miles again’.

Birbal said, ‘Then, do me a favor friend!’

The man smiled and asked, ‘Sure, let me know’.

Birbal put his hand on the man’s shoulder and contended, ‘On you way back, deny the rumors about my secret generosity. I am not rich enough for such grants.’

Saying this Birbal walked away.
