Once there lived a woman named Genny.
Genny was a simple and soft hearted woman. She lived alone after her ailing aged mother died few years back. Genny was not married. But as a woman's heart desired, she always wanted to have a baby girl. Genny longed to have a girl child to nurture and love. But her dream remained a dream.
Genny's desire for the baby girl grew with time. One evening while she sat all by herself in the garden watching the kids play around, she heard two women talking about magic and witchcraft. Genny became thoughtful.
On her way back to home she kept thinking about it. And she thought about it all night through...!
Next day, Genny covered her head with the beautiful satin scarf her mother gave, and left home. She walked for over a mile reaching a lesser known silent, narrow lane. There was only one house in the lane. It had very dim lights and looked secluded. Genny entered the house.
The house was 'The house of witch'. The witch looked mystical and very divine. Genny greeted her and expressed her heart desire. The witch mediated for a while. Then she gave a magic barley grain to Genny.
'Go and plant this grain in your garden. You will be blessed with your desire!', said the witch.
Genny was not satisfied with the witch's way. She took it half heartily and returned home.
That evening, Genny planted the magic seed in a flower pot. However, her hopes for a baby girl from the magic seed were very vain.
Next morning, when Genny came to her kitchen for preparing tea her eyes were stuck to see a large beautiful bud propping through the window. The bud as though was peeping inside the kitchen and greeting her the new day! Genny stood unthoughfully for a while. As the morning sun radiated a calm yellow golden aura, Genny gently touched the bud and kissed it heartily. Her love and faith caused the magic bud to blossom!
Genny was overjoyed and mesmerized by the unexpected bloom. In the flower there sat a beautiful little girl - pious and radiant as an angel! She looked like a thumb and so Genny named her Thumbelina.
Thumbelina became a part of Benny's life and they lived together happily.
