Long time there lived a buffalo in a forest. He was very strong, but friendly and peace loving. He never troubled anyone.
The buffalo lived under a very big banyan tree. The tree had a wide canopy and provided shelter to many birds and animals.
One hot afternoon, a monkey was passing by the tree. He was very tired and decided to take rest on the tree's branches. It was cool and peaceful under the tree and the monkey soon fell asleep. When he woke up he saw many birds, animals on and around the tree. The monkey liked the place very much and made it its home.
The monkey was however naughty. He often screeched loudly scaring small birds and animals. He hooted and whistled disturbing all animals around. He jumped with big bang jerks and thuds on the branches. He swung on the branches very casually often causing the nests to fa down. The animals which dwelled the tree were very upset with the mischiefs of the monkey.
Not only this, the monkey was intentionally troubled the buffalo. He dropped sticks, eaten fruit seeds and peels on him. He would often find the chance to jump ridiculously on the buffalo's back. He pulled the buffalo's tail and swirled it around. He hooted when the buffalo rested during the quite hours of the noon. He even kicked the buffalo and pulled its horns. The buffalo was greatly troubled by the monkey, however he never retaliated. He ignored him maintaining his calm and composure. The monkey was too obsessed with his activities. He mindlessly continued his antics, much to the agony of animals around him.
However, Yaksha who was the soul of the tree was a constant onlooker. He was troubled by the monkey's way. One day, when the monkey was asleep, Yaksha spoke to the buffalo.
"O kind buffalo, today again the monkey's pulled your horns and tail. It's been months since he has been troubling you and all birds, animals around. You should punish him. You are strong. Why don't you teach the monkey good lesson?"
The buffalo replied, "O great spirit. I am peace loving and do not want to give pain to anyone. But the day is near, when this notorious monkey shall be punished for his deeds".
And the day finally came....
One day, the kind buffalo went roaming into the forest. A wild buffalo came roaming around the tree. He was tired and decided to rest under the tree. While the wild buffalo was resting, the monkey sprang and bounced on the buffalo's back. The wild buffalo was torn in pain. He overcome the pain and rose up in rage. He furiously attacked the monkey, leaving no chance to him to defend himself. The wicked monkey died mercilessly.
