5.7 Panchtantra - The Brahmin's Dream

Once there lived a priest in a village. His name was Swabhavakripna.

Swabhavakripna was poor and used to beg for his living. He was all alone in this world. He had no relatives or friends.

One day the priest returned home lat. He was tried and soon fell asleep.

The priest starting dreaming of becoming a rich man. He saw him self wearing good clothes and enjoying great food. He imagined having many shops and growing richer and richer. He had healthy cattle and gave lots of milk and bore young ones. The young ones grew to give more milk and reproduced further. He earned from selling milk, butter and curd. He built a big house for himself. The priest saw himself to be happy and rich. He lived a lavish life and soon married a beautiful girl. He had sons. His sons grew up and they became very mischievous and naughty. He scolded him and asked them not to run around and shout. But the boys would not listen. So he took a bamboo and chased them.

The dreaming priest went deep into his dreams and began moving his legs as he as chasing his naughty boys. His leg hit the earthenware in which he had kept his food. He got this food from begging during the day. The earthen pot fell and the food was scattered all over.

The priest woke up hearing the loud shattering sound. He was suddenly out of his dream and shocked to see real world.

Seeing the scattered food, the priest felt sad and slept hungry that night.

Moral: Do not build castles in the air.
