7. Hitopadesh - The Cat who Served The Lion

Once there lived a lion in a cave. He was strong and mighty.

One afternoon, when the lion was sleeping a small mouse climbed on him. He played with lion's crown fur and blew air on his whiskers.

The lion was annoyed and woke up. He tried to catch mouse with his strong paw and kill it, but the mouse quickly escaped.

The lion tried again and again to pounce on the mouse but it escaped and hid in a small hole. The lion got tried and thought to himself, “It’s a small mouse. I should not waste my energy in killing it. I am the king of this forest and should ask someone else to kill the mouse for me'.

The lion walked out of his cave and went to a cat who lived in a nearby village.

The lion told the cat about the mouse and asked her to accompany him to his cave.
When the mouse saw the cat in the cave, he was afraid that it may kill him. So the rat confined to his hole to remain safe from cat's attack.

The lion could now sleep peacefully as the cat kept a close watch over the mouse. The cat continued to live in the cave and received a part from lion's share everyday. Thus they happily passed their days.

One day, the mouse saw the cat and lion were sleepy. So it quietly came out of its hole. The cat reacted quickly and pounced on the mouse and killed it. When the lion saw the dead mouse, he was very happy.

After the mouse died, the lion stopped giving food to the cat and ignored her. The cat grew weaker day by day and one day she died of starvation.

Moral: People value things only when they need them and when they are useful to them.
