Once there lived a shepherd-boy in a far off village. The boy took his herd of sheep to the hillock everyday for gazing.
One day, while the sheep were gazing, the boy saw one of its sheep was missing. He cried loudly, 'Wolf! Wolf!'
The people who lived nearby, came running to help. But the boy saw that the missing sheep was gazing behind a large bush, hence could not be seen. When the villagers came they saw no wolf or its foot impressions around. The boy lied to the villagers that the wolf was hiding behind the bush and had disappeared suddenly. The villagers searched around, but finally returned as they found nothing.
Few days went by.
One day, the shepherd thought of scaring the villagers by calling wolf. So he cried for help again. When the villagers gathered, they saw the boy smiling mutely. They returned in disgust.
After some days, the shepherd boy again thought of musing himself. So he cried out, 'Wolf! Wolf!' The villagers soon gathered around, but they saw no sheep. They went back talking among themselves about the fake alerts given by the boy.
One day, while the sheep gazed, the shepherd boy caught sleep. He was suddenly woken up the loud cried of a sheep and unrest among other sheep. The boy was taken aback to see a wolf. He cried in vain for help, 'People help, its a wolf! Wolf! Wolf! Its killing my sheep. Someone please help me!
The boy called the people for help again and again. He was alarmed and helpless. His voice reached the villagers who had gathered earlier to help him, but now in disbelief none of them came to help him. The wolf gradually devoured his entire flock and the shepherd boy fled for his own life.
Moral: Do not lie. By lying, one is distrusted and looses faith of other people.
