115. Aesop's Fables - The Miser And His Gold

Once there lived a rich man in a village. He had amassed huge wealth and took pride in it. But he was miser. They never helped the poor by feeding them or giving them alms, nor did he give charity in temples for noble work. He kept his wealth secretly under the foot of a tree in his backyard.

The man was always concerned about his wealth and used to dig up buried wealth everyday to his heart contend. One day a thief saw the man. He desired to steal the pot of wealth and dug up the buried pot that night.

Next day, when the man came and dug up, he found the treasure pot missing. He was wrecked and howled bitterly over the loss. When the neighbors heard his cry, they came asking. The man told them about his buried treasure.

One of the neighbors asked, ‘Did any one among you all take it?’
The people present there sighed a no. One of them said, ‘What is lost cannot be gained back. We should go back to our work’.

The neighbors left the wailing man and went back to their homes.

Moral: Wealth which is unused or misused withers away.
