141. Aesop's Tales - The Boys and the Frogs

One day it rained heavily after days of scorching summer heat. The evening became very pleasant. When the rain stopped, people came out to walk. Some children played happily on the swings, while the others floated paper boats on the accumulated rain water on the streets.

A group of frogs made its way in a nearby swamp. They merrily hopped around and crocked. The tadpoles went leaping around the swamp soils. The old frogs sat on the banks, bulged their eyes. The sound of frogs and the splashing swamp water reverberated around. A group of boys from the near village came for fishing in the forest pond. When they heard the sound, they went there and saw the frogs dotted around. Seeing the boys, the frogs leapt into the water.

One of the boys suggested playing the hit-the-target game. The other boys agreed and they started hitting the frogs randomly. It came as a volley of boulders and many frogs were hurt badly. Some of the little frogs were injured by the stones, while other died.

Seeing this, an elderly frog was sitting under a rock mount in the water got very worried. He decided to stop the boys. The frog hopped out and seated on a lily pad. He yelled, altering the boys, ‘O Humans! Your are merciless and work mindless. My fellows are injured and some of them have died. It is game for you, but look the damage it is doing to us. Have pity on us!’

Moral: Never try to have fun or pleasure at the expense of others.
