142. Aesop's Tales - The Lamp

One evening, the lady of a house overfilled a lamp. She kept the lamp on the window slab. The lamp flared brightly and illuminated the surrounding brightly. The lamp was elated to see its brightness spreading around. It arrogantly said, ‘I am brighter than the day sun!’

It was pleasant night when suddenly the strong winds started dashing against the window panes. The wind flickered the flame of lamp and then blew it off. It was darkness around. The lady of the house came with another dimly lit lamp. She lit the lamp again, and said, ‘Do not be arrogant. You are emanating bright light because of the heavily oil fill. Do not boast over what you don’t have actually. Henceforth be contented and keep radiating your peaceful light in silence’.

Moral: Do not be arrogant about your traits.

Proverb: Pride comes before a fall.
