Once there lived an ascetic named
Drona.
Drona had abandoned the worldly
life and lived alone. He meditated most of time and survived on the fruits he
collected from nearby forest.
One day, Drona was visited by his
disciple. The disciple gifted Drona a pair of calves as a gesture of respect
and thanks.
The calves were young and tender.
Drona took care of them and gradually the calves became fat.
One day, a thief was passing by
Drona's hut. He saw the calves grazing in the small fenced front yard and
thought of stealing them.
That night the thief took a rope
and left for stealing the calves. While on his way, a demon appeared before the
thief. The thief was sacred and asked, 'Who are you? What do you want? Let me
go, please'.
The demon replied, 'I am a demon
who resides the tree on this way. I want to know who you are. Speak truth or I
shall kill you'.
The thief was terrified. He said,
'I am a thief. I am going with this rope to steal a Brahmin’s calves'.
Both, the thief and the devil were
evil minded. They became friends and decided to work for each other benefit-
while the demon wanted to eat the Brahmin, the thief intended to steal his
calves. They headed towards Dona's hut together.
They reached the Brahmin's hut and
saw him eating his food. They quietly slipped inside and waited for Brahmin to
fall asleep.
When the Brahmin finished his
food, he drank water from the earthen pot and then went to sleep.
The demon saw the Brahmin asleep
and appeared to eat him. But the this asked him to wait until he tied the
calves with rope and left.
But the demon argued that the
sound of calves will wake the Brahmin and he will not get to eat the Brahmin.
The thief disagreed and they started arguing. The noise woke up the Brahmin.
The thief told the Brahmin that
the demon intended to eat him, while the demon revealed that the thief came
with a rope to steal the calves.
Hearing them, the Brahmin started
chanting loudly. The evil spirited demon feared the power of chants and he
disappeared immediately. The Brahmin then took the bamboo and chased out the
thief
