Long ago, there was a large tree which bore big fruits which had sweet smell and flavour.
The tree shelthered many animals and birds. On the tree there lived a troop of monkey. Their king, Bodhisatta was compassionate and virtuous.
One day, the king saw that a branch of the tree had grown just over the river. The wise king reasoned that if the fruits of the tree fall on the stream, they might float to areas of human dwellings; who would come to take all fruits from themselves.
He called the fellow monkeys and explained it all to them. He further asked them not to let any fruit grow on that branch.
However, the monkeys missed one of the bud at far end of the branch. Eventually the bud became the flower and gradually riped to form fruit. One hot afternoon while the monkeys were resting, the fruit fell of and floated down the stream.
The fruit got stuck in a net downstream where the king was bathing. He was suprised to see the unique fruit.
The King was delighted by the aroma and appearance if fruit. He got it tested and tasted it himself. He immediately asked his men to find the tree which bore such fruits.
After days of search, the king's men found the tree. Seeing that monkeys were eating fruits, the king's men started attacking the monkeys with arrows.
The king of monkeys, Bodhisatta heard the hue and cry of fellow monkeys. He jumped on a mountain peak to defend them.
He held a strong bamboo with his legs and bend it towards the tree. Then he asked other momjeys to use him as a bridge and jump to mountain peak for safety. All the monkeys safely reached the peak but the monkey king was badly injured and bled. He soon fell unconscious.
The king who had been watching the monkeys was moved to see the plight of the monkey king and his show of exemplification of valour and sacrifice to save his fellows. He asked his men to bring down the unconscious ape and provide him aid.
After sometime the king monkey came his consciousness. The king asked him as why did he risked his life for his fellowers, who were supposed to serve the king.
The monkey king replied, "O King! I am weak and broken, but my mind is still strong. I helped only those over whom I ruled so long." The King was impressed to learn such humbility from the monkey king.
He wanted to praise the monkry king, but found him dead.
