48. Aesop's Fables - The Hare and the Hound

Once there lived a hare in a forest. One day a hungry hound was roaming around the hare's burrow. The hound waited for the hare to come out of its burrow.

After a long wait, the hare came out. When the hare heard the hound growling and approaching towards it, it began running.

The hound chased the hare. They ran for some miles, the hare in anguish to escape the attacked and the hound in want of its food. After a long run, the hound fell of on its legs. It was now more worn out due to hunger and running.

A goat herd who was standing nearby saw the hare running off from the hound's reach. He laughed out loudly and said, 'The little hare is a better runner than you large dog. Look how fast it ran defeating a hunting dog like you!'

The hound was not embarrassed to hear goat herd. He replied, 'You are a goat herd and your brain is alike. Do you see the difference? The hare is running for its life and I am running for food. If not this hare, I will find another animal for my food. But if he gets killed, there will be not second take'.

Moral : Incentive encourages efforts we put in.
