Aesop's Fables - The Astronomer

Once there lived an astronomer. He used to watch the night sky everyday and noted his observations.

One night the astronomer was walking while he gazed up the stars and constellations intendly. He was completely observed in watching the stars and failed to see a well in his way. Soon he fell into the well. He cried loudly for help.

A man who was sleeping in his hut nearby the well, heard the astronomer's cry for help. He rushed out of his hut and went to rescue the astronomer. He extended a rope and helped him come out of the well.

The man asked the astronomer, " How did you fell into the well? Are you drunk?'

The astronomer explained, 'Friend, thanks for saving my life. I would have drowned to death if you would have not come to rescue me. I am not drunk. I fell into the well because I was too engrossed observing the sky above that I overlooked what was on ground'.

The astronomer learned that common sense cannot be learned from books or by observing.   It comes only by presence of mind and being vigilant.

Moral: (1)Do not ignore small matters in want of higher aims. (2) Common sense cannot be learned - it comes only with presence of mind.
