88. Aesop's Fables - The Swallow and the Other Birds

Once there lived a farmer in a village. One day the farmer was sowing hemp seeds in his fields.

There was a tree near the field which was nested by many birds, including a small swallow.

When the swallow saw the farmer sowing the hemp seeds, it called all other birds dwelling the tree, and said, ‘we all need to be become cautious this farmer. He is sowing hemp seeds. The hemp from these plants will be eventually used to weave nets, which can be used as traps for us. It is essential that we fly to this field every day and try to feed on these sown seeds’.

The other birds laughed at the swallow, and paid no heed to what she said.

The hemp seeds sprouted and soon saplings grew from them. The sapling grew into plants yielded hemp. The hemp was used to make cords. The cords were woven into nets. The nets were widely used as bird traps. The birds who had despised the swallow's advice repented as many of them were trapped in the hemp cord nets. Some of them were caged and sold, while others were killed for food.

The swallow saw its fellow birds suffering in the hands of humans and became very sad. It alone survived due to its intelligence.

Moral: It is essential to destroy the cause of evil timely; else it will grow to ruin our interests.
