Brave Jatayu Fights Ravana

Sampathi, the elder brother of Jatayu became wingless. He started living the seashore. His younger brother, Jayatu became the ruler of Panchavati.

During their excile, Rama, Laksman and Sita reached the forests of Panchavati, where they were greeted by Jayatu. Jatayu was a friend of King Dhasrat, Rama's father and the ruler of Ayodhya. Rama, his brother and Sita treated Jayatu with fatherly respected. Jayatu welcomed them to his kingdom of Panchavati.

Years passed and one day Jadayu saw Ravana, the king of demons who ruled the kingdom of Sri Lanka was forcefully carrying away Sita. He fought bravely with Ravana, but Ravana out powered him. He mercilessly cut Jayatu's wings and gave him grave injuries. Jayatu was fatelly wounded and fell on the ground. Ravana carried away Sita.

When Rama returned to his hut, he found Sita missing. So Rama and his brother, Laksman went out in search of Sita. On their way, they found wounded Jayatu who was bleeding to death. Jayatu told Rama how Ravana forcefully abducted Sita, while Rama held him in his lap. He took his last breadth in Rama's lap. His last rities were performed by Rama.

Jayatu is remembered as a brave and devoted bird in the history of Ramayana.
