Brahma's Boon to Ravana and His Brothers

Once there lived a great demon named Malyavan. He had a daughter named Kaikasi.

One day, Malyavan saw Kubera. Kubera was very powerful and wealthy. He was born to Sage Visravas and was a brahmin by clan.

Malyavan asked his daughter Kaikasi to approach Kubera and convince him to marry her, as this association could benefit the demons in time to come.

Though Kubera refused to marry Kaikasi, she tried hard and suceeded in persuing Kubera to marry her.

Kubera and Kaikasi got married. They had three son named; Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Vibheeshana and a daughter called Surpanaka.

Ravana and his brothers, Kumbhakarna and Vibheeshana performed penance for several years to please the Lord Brahma. Thereafter Lord Brahma appeared to bless the brothers with desired boons. Ravana the eldest of brothers asked for boon of immortality. However, Lord Brahma told him that he could not go again the laws of nature. So Ravana asked for a boon no one except monkeys and man could kill him. He was granted this boon.

Ravana's brother- Kumbhakarna sought boon of Nirdevathwam, which means no one could defeat him. But Lord Brahma said, 'None one defeat a person who is always in sleep. I therefore grant you boon of Nidrevathwam (always sleeping)'. Kumbhakarna happliy accepted the boon.

The youngest of brothers sought devotion to Lord Vishnu. He was happlily granted the boon.
