Once there lived a hare in a forest.
The hare was very lovely, quick witted and loving. He had many friends and enjoyed their company.
One afternoon, when was asleep he heard a strange sound. He jumped on the tree and tried to find what was unusual. Much to his horror, he saw a group of hounds approaching. He recognized it gas the same group who had taken away his elder brother by force sometime back.
The hare knew that the hounds were coming to take him. So he ran for help to his friends.
The horse was a good runner, and so the hare went to him and said, 'Friend, the hounds are coming my way. Please take me away on your back quickly as you can'.
But the horse was indifferent. He said, 'Friend, I am going to my friend's wedding today. Pardon me please, I am getting late. I think you should immediately approach someone else for help, without wasting time in thinking'.
The horse left and the hare ran to the ox for help.
The ox appeared to have returned from slogging in the fields. The hare quickly narrated his plea to the ox and said, 'Friend, could you defend me with your horn?'
The ox said, 'Friend, I had a very tiring day in the fields. I have just returned from the fields. My legs are all muddy. I shall take bath, drink water, take fodder and sleep. I am too tired to put any defence for you against those fierce hounds. I think you should go to the goat. She is a very dear friend of yours and will surely help you'.
The hare ran to the goat for help. The goat though a good friend, was very meek. She was alarmed to hear that the hounds are approaching. When the hare asked her to take him on her back and hide behind the mountain where she went for gazing.
But the goat excused him and said, 'No friend, today I am not going to the mountainside for gazing. I think you should seek ram's help. He is sturdy in built and has strong horns. He can surely carry you on her back or defend you with his horns from the hounds'.
The hare immediately ran for help to the ram. The ram was merrily munching fresh grass by the lakeside. The hare asked for his help and pleaded him to take away him on his back. But the ram denied bluntly. He reasoned, 'Friend, I do not like to interfere in this matter. The hounds you understand are known to attack rams, goats and hares alike. How can I risk my own life?'
The hare was disappointed. He suddenly thought of his new friend, a calf who was few months old. The hare approached the calf for help. The calf said, 'Friend, I regret I cannot help you. I cannot take responsibility of your life on myself, as many senior members have already withdrawn from getting involved in the matter'.
While the calf talked, the hare heard the hounds nearing them. He asked the calf to flee far as he could and himself took on his heels and ran away fast as he could.
Moral: He who has many friends, has indeed no friends. But the goat excused him and said, 'No friend, today I am not going to the mountainside for gazing. I think you should seek ram's help. He is sturdy in built and has strong horns. He can surely carry you on her back or defend you with his horns from the hounds'.
