3. Aesop's Fables - The Ass and the Lapdog

Once there lived a rich farmer.

The farmer had a large farm with many animals. he hired many men to take care of his animals. The farmer sold various farm products in the market. He loved all his animals and feed them well.

One of the ass was his favourite. He had found this ass as a young one in a forest. His mother had died giving birth to him. So the farmer brought it to his farm and tendered it since then. The farmer often took the ass out when he went out for walk. He loved the ass dearly.

One day the farmer came to inspect his stables. When the ass saw the farmer, he cheered.

That day the farmer had come with his lapdog to the stables. While the farmer sat down, the lapdog frisked around him happily. He jumped in and out of his lap, licked him. The farmer too patted the dog, stroked his ears and gave him some biscuits to eat.

The ass had been intently watching the master and the lapdog. He certainly wanted to be the master. So the ass broke loose from his halter with a trust. He ran towards the farmer and began prancing about him. The farmer laughed loudly.

Suddenly, the ass put his feet upon the farmer's shoulder attempting to jump into his lap. The farmer was surprised. He cried for help. His servants immediately rushed towards him and thrashed the ass with sticks and pitchforks.

The ass never repeated the mistake and behaved well towards his master henceforth.

Moral: Clumsy jesting is not a  joke.
