39. Aesop's Fables - The Fox and the Masks

One day the fox came roaming near the village. The village was had an event. A big theatre show was going on.

The theatre artists and crew had taken accomodation in large rest house. The yard of the house was installed with tents for stage performance.

While the performance was going on, the fox leapt into the backyard from the boundary wall and escaped into the storeroom.

The fox went around curiously surveying the storeroom. Suddenly, the fox was startled and pulled itself away in fear, seeing a face glaring down towards him.

The fox went further and much to its amazement and fear, he saw many such faces staring him.

The fox ran away. He sat and watched quietly from the window and saw that faces were still. The fox saw people entering the room with masks. He understood that the masks were used by the artists to put up a false face in shows.

The fox thought to himself, 'The masks look so fine. But they lack brains. Indeed, vanity is a false show and such glaring masks cannot hide inner emptiness'.

Moral: Vanity is a poor substitute for inner worth.
