Once there lived a wolf in a forest.
One day the wolf luckily found an easy prey. The wolf relished the fresh meat and tried gorging it hurriedly. While it had been eating, a small piece of bone got stuck in his throat. The wolf could not swallow it. He cried in pain and madly rushed around seeking something to relieve the pain.
While he was struggling with the stuck bone, many forest animals passed by. The wolf asked each of them to help him get rid of the bone. However, none of them understood how to help him.
After sometime a crane came across the wolf. The wolf had lied down, feeling sick with terrible bone in his throat. He stopped the crane and said, 'Friend, I am greatly troubled by a bone stuck in my throat. I will be grateful if you help me in getting rid of it'.
The crane agreed. He asked the wolf to lie down and open his jaws wide apart. The wolf did so. The crane dexterously put its long neck down the wolf's throat and moved the bone out.
The wolf was relieved. He thanked the crane and started going away. Just then the crane said, 'Friend, I have helped you. You should reward me this'.
The wolf replied coaxingly, 'Yes friend, I have taken care of you. Do not you remember your entire neck was in my mouth a while ago and I did not harm you. You should be grateful to me'.
The crane was wonder stuck to hear the wolf. He promised himself never to help a shrewd friend as the wolf.
Moral: Gratitude and greed go not together.
