87. So Why Do Camels have Hump?

One day throughly impressed by Birbal's wit and wisdom, Emperor Akbar lauded him in his court and promised him many rewards.

Days passed and Akbar forgot to reward Birbal. Birbal was disappointed by the emperor's neglance.

One evening Abkar went alobg the banks of River Yamuna to take a walk. He was escorted by Birbal. They talked about various matters and were having a nice time together.

While they talked, Akbar saw a camel. He said, 'Birbal, donot you think it is so usual for a camel to have such a hump on its back. Look at its crooked neck and how it walks because of this hump. Why do these camel carry that hump?'

Birbal saw an opportunity to remind Akbar about his promise to reward him. He wittingly replied, 'Yes mighty emperor, you are right - the hump looks very unusual. But I learned from a scriptures that whosoever forgets to keep promises are cursed to have a crooked necks. May be the camel in their far ancestors forgot to keep certain promises. So their entire lineage now has that hump in their back'.

Akbar was startled to hear Birbal. He said nothing to Birbal, but nodded in agreement with him.

Back in palace, Akbar asked his men to arrange for gifts and rewards.

Next day, Akbar called Birbal and rewarded him as was promised by him.

Birbal once again proved his intelligence and wit.
