One summer afternoon, Akbar went to the forest river with his two sons for a bath. He was accompanied by his wise courtier, Birbal.
On the banks of the river, Akbar and his two sons took off their clothes and left for a dip. They asked Birbal to take care of their clothes.
Birbal stood looking at them. All clothes were on his shoulder, while he waited for them to return.
When Akbar saw Birbal stand and gazing them, he felt bit odd. It occurred to him that Birbal was mutely teasing him. So he called Birbal and said, 'Birbal, looks like you are carrying the load like the washerman’s donkey'.
Birbal quickly retorted, 'My majesty, the washerman’s donkey carries only one donkey’s load. Here I am carrying the load of three donkeys'.
Akbar was rendered speechless by Birbal's straight forward answer.
