Once a sage came to Akbar’s court.
The sage heard that the emperor's court had many witty and intelligent courtiers. Therefore he expressed his desire to test the intelligence of his courtiers.
Akbar granted the permission to sage. He asked all his his courtiers to gather in the court. When the courtiers gathered, the sage revealed a pot covered with a cloth and asked them, 'Can anyone of you tell me what is there in this pot?'.
All courtiers stood silently. None of the had the slightest clue of what was hidden in the covered pot.
After sometime, Birbal came forward and uncovered the pot. He peeped inside and said, 'O holy sage, the pot empty'.
The sage contended, 'Anyone could have uncovered the pot and told me what you have told'.
Birbal contended, 'You asked what is there in the pot, but you never said not to open it'.
The sage realized his mistake. He humbly bowed before the emperor and appreciated Birbal's presence of mind.
