One day Akbar drew a line on the floor in his court. Then he asked his courtiers to shorten the line without touching it.
All courtiers kept thinking about the perplexing problem. An hour passed, but no courtier could think of shortening the line without touching it.
Akbar asked Birbal if he had a solution. Birbal took the chalk and drew a longer line parallel to it. He said, 'My Majesty, the line is now shortened'.
The entire court and emperor Akbar himself applauded Birbal's demonstration of wittiness.
