78. Counting the Crows

One fine day Akbar was walking in his palace gardens with Birbal. They talked o various matters. Just then a flock came around and made a large sound.

The crows caught the attention of Akbar and Birbal who turned around watching them fly, perch and sing. Suddenly something occurred to Akbar and he asked Birbal, 'How many crows do you think are there in my kingdom'.

Birbal thought for a while and then replied, “My Majesty, there are ninety-five thousand, four hundred and sixty three crows in your kingdom'.

Akbar smiled jeeringly. He said, 'Birbal are you sure of that number?'

Birbal was confident. In fact, very confident. He reassured Akbar of the number and said, 'My Majesty, you can get them counted'.

Akbar smiled and said, 'OK, if I get them counted and the number of crows is more than 95,463?'

Birbal said, 'The extra numbers of crows are visiting your kingdom'.

Akbar gave a musing look and asked Birbal, 'What if the number of crows is less than what you told?'

Birbal plainly replied, 'It would mean that some of crow from your kingdom are visiting the neighboring kingdoms'.

Akbar was pleased with Birbal's answer. They both laughed out and enjoyed walking in the pleasant weather.
