12. Aesop's Fables - The Buffoon and the Countryman

One year a great country fair was held in the city. People from far and wide came to attend the fair.

There were many entertainers in the fair. The fair had many jugglers, gunshotters, bubble blowers, magicians among other who come to entertain people and earn money.

One day, a buffoon came to perform in the fair. The buffoon imitated sound of animals. This made the people laugh. As the buffoon started
performing, people gathered in large number around him to watch and hear him. People enjoyed his performance and soon the buffoon became popular. Large number of people started coming to watch his unique way of intimating animals.

One day the buffoon concluded his show by squeaking like a pig. The sound he made was so similar and natural, that people thought  he had a porker hiding underneath.

Just then one of the onlookers came forward and said, 'People! The sound he just made is not like a pig's squeak. Give me a day's time and shall present before you all the real sound of a pig's squeak'.

Next day, the man appeared before the people for mimicry. He lowered his head and squealed hideously. The onlookers felt deceived. They started abusing him and threw stones at him.

The man raised his head and cried loudly as he could, 'Fool! What you heard is real squeak of a pig'. Saying this he held up the piglet, whose ear he had been pinching to make it squeak.

People gazed in amazement. They never came again to watch the buffoon show.

Moral: People often believe and cheer imitation and hiss of the real thing.
