Once there lived a fox in jungle. It was very cunning. One day it was very hungry and went in search of food. While roaming, it reached the village and saw a farm.
The fox kept prowling about a farmer’s hen-coop until it saw a rooster. The rooster was roosting high up beyond his reach.
Seeing the rooster the fox thought to herself, 'Here is my meal. It came easily'.
The fox called the rooster and said, 'Friend, I came here to give the lion's message to you. The king lion has declared a universal truce. Henceforth, we all animals shall live together and no one shall harm the other. The forest animals have planned to celebrate this. I came to ask you to come with me and join the brotherhood ceremony'.
Hearing this the rooster roosted loudly and said, 'Friend, indeed it is a great news. And see there is someone more whom you can share this news with'.
The fox asked in surprise, 'Who my dear friend?'
The rooster said, 'Turn around and see. My master's most faithful dog is coming here. I think you should give him the same news and congratulate him as well'.
The fox grew anxious. She hurriedly said, 'Sure I can tell the dog. But I am afraid if he has ever heard of the King Lion’s decree'. Saying this, the fox ran away towards the wild.
Moral: Cunning often outwits itself.
