This ancedote relates to Joshu, a great Zen master. Joshu was only sixteen years when he commenced Zen studies and continued it until the age if eighty when he realised it. Joshu preached Zen until the age of one hundred and twenty.
Once a disciple asked Joshu, "Master, I have nothing in mind. What should I do?"
Joshu said, "You should throw it out."
The disciple said, "Master, I have nothing, how can I throw it out?"
Joshu smiled and said, "then carry it out."
