No Moon, No Water

The story is about a nun named Chiyono.

Chiyono was disciple of Bukko of Engaku. For a long time, she was ounable to attain the fruits of her  meditation.

One night Chiyono was carrying an old pail of water bound with bamboo. It was a moonlit night and she had not gone too far when the broke and the pail fell. Chiyono was set free the same moment.

Chiyono wrote the following prose in her commemoration:

'In this way
I tried to save old pail
But the bamboo frail
And towards its end it trail
And then at last
Its bottom fell out.
No more water in the pail!
No more moon in the water sail!'
