146. Aesop Fable - The Ant and the Grasshopper

Once there was a vast grassland. The grassland had many different plants and shrubs. It had lush grass which shined in the morning sun. Many animals and insects inhabited the grassland. One of them was an ant.

The ant was very hard working and thoughtful. She had a friend who was a grasshopper. During early summer they played in the grassland and merrily spend their time.

As days passed, summers began receding. The weather began to change, the ant thought of gathering food for approaching winter. So next day onwards, she starting searching for food. Everyday, she gathered the food in small piles in her winter home.

All this while, the grasshopper hopped and played around. He never thought about the approaching winter and the how food went scare during winter days.

One noon, he saw the ant carrying a large corn of ear. The grasshopper cried, 'O friend! Its been days since we have played together. Let's chat and play. Why are you toiling so such? Winters are far'.

The ant was wise. She said, 'Friend! Winters are approaching. The food will become scare. I am piling up food for winters. I suggest that you should search and accumulate food for winters'.
But the grasshopper ignored the ant's advise. He instead said, 'Friend, stop worrying about winters. The days are pleasant, let's play around happily'.

However, the ant knew the need for food. She went on her way dragging the corn ear to her nest.

Days passed by and winters arrived. The sunlight grew scantly and there was fog around. The drizzle wetted the grassland. The grasshopper searched for shelter and food. He was stuck badly by cold weather and hunger. One day, he scrambled to death due to extreme hunger and bitter cold.

The ant survived the winters in her winter home with the food she had stored. She pitied the grasshopper for his sheer negligence.

Moral: One should plan and prepare for needy days or times of adversity.
