A certain man made a wooden image of Mercury and offered it for sale. When no one appeared willing to buy it, in order to attract purchasers, he cried out that he had the statue to sell of a benefactor who bestowed wealth and helped to heap up riches. One of the bystanders said to him, 'My good fellow, why do you sell him, being such a one as you describe, when you may yourself enjoy the good things he has to give?' 'Why,' he replied, 'I am in need of immediate help, and he is wont to give his good gifts very slowly.
Once a craftsman came to a village with images of God Mercury crafted on wooden slabs. He tried hard selling them, but people refused to buy. The craftsman was saddened. He was improvised and needed money. So he thought of a an idea.
Next day, the craftsman took all the images of Mercury and cried that the images bore picture of Mercury who is a great benefactor and bestower of wealth and wishes to attract people to buy the images.
A man who heard the craft seller came to him and said, 'If these images bearing the impressions of Mercury can bestow wealth and wishes, you should keep all of them with yourself for your own benefit. Why are you selling them?'
The craftsman was taken back by the straightforwardness of the man. He was wordless.
However, he stood up collecting images he had, and said, 'The benefactor bestows wealth slowly. I am selling them because I am in immediate need of money.' Thereafter he left the village with all images he came with.
Moral: Do not get carried away by what people say and pretend.
