One day, a nightingale sat on the branch of an oak tree and
sang melodiously in its wont. Suddenly the eyes of a hungry hawk fell on
it. The hawk swooped down swiftly and
without a blink seized the nightingale.
The nightingale was out of its breadth and pleaded the hawk
for its life. She said, ‘O mighty hawk! I am a small bird and even if you kill
me for your food, you hunger will not be satisfied. I plead you to let me go
and pursue some larger bird for preying upon’.
The hawk was startled to hear the persuasive reason given by
the little nightingale. He said, ‘O little nightingale! You talk intelligent.
But tell me why should I let the little food I have in hand for want of large birds
which are not even in sight now. For now I should satisfy my hunger with you’.
Moral: There is proverbial saying, ‘a bird in the hand is
worth two in the bush’. The saying means that one should be contented with what
one has rather than risk and loose what it in want of more.
